Rain water catchment, filtration and training
Uganda sits amongst some of the most war torn nations of Africa. Northern Uganda has seen almost 25 years of brutal rebel activity. To the north, South Sudan has seen an incredible 40 years of war and suffering between the Arab north and the black south. To the west the Democratic Republic of Congo has had a vicious 8 years of fighting as the central government collapsed from within.
A greater problem than war in this region is the lack of safe drinking water. Diseases from unsafe water and the lack of basic sanitation kill more people every year than all forms of violence, including war. Children are especially vulnerable, as their bodies aren’t strong enough to fight diarrhea, dysentery and other illnesses.
In Sub-Saharan Africa 750,000 children die each year from diarrheal diseases alone. Each week 30,000 deaths occur from unsafe water and unhygienic living conditions, 90% of these that die are children under 5 years old. Many of these diseases are preventable and treatable. The risk of disease and death can be dramatically reduced.
The techniques we will use are rain water catchment through the construction of Ferro-Cement tanks, water purification through filtration, PVC hand water pumps, sanitation through building latrines and teaching basic hygiene.
Our projects in Southern Uganda will involve training a community of people, who then will share what they have learned with their neighboring communities. This multiplication process has the potential to impact thousands of people in this region by providing them with clean water. This means that thousands of these Central African children will have a higher chance to make it to adulthood and the life expectancy rate of adults will rise from the current rate of less than 50 years.
With your help, we can easily make a major difference in the lives of these people by educating them in simple techniques to provide for their own needs. Disease and death should not be a way of life for anybody.
